This piece is about the treason being committed by the Republican Party. There are many like me who believe the reality that American Democracy is but a thin veneer of limited choices set against the power of a corporate oligarchy. Leftist Radicals with far more cachet than I, like Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore, have conveyed this belief in all of their many works, yet each urges voting for Hillary Clinton. For many years I’ve written extensively about what I call the American Oligarchy and the illusion of Democracy that exists in our country. My caveat though was that observing the forms of that illusion are vitally important for us all. My premise has always been that the American Oligarchy is not a homogeneous one, but actually made up of various powerful factions, in hot competition with each other to advance their private interests. It is within the interstices of this competition, that we citizens can make limited advances for our own benefit. This is why I bother to vote and in my limited way to advocate for the rights and benefits of most Americans. While my outlook is as a radical, I believe that violent revolution is counterproductive, because it ushers in more repression than it advocates against. It is these beliefs that put me in the broad mainstream of “loyal” American citizens, albeit on the fringes.
My meaning is that the semblance of freedom in this society is a fragile one and that any benefits to be derived by its citizens, come from observing the norms of the patina of democracy that exist. In my eight decades on this planet, I’ve seen positive changes develop and some oppression’s of bigotry and sexism dissolve through observance of these norms. That change is possible, even in the midst of corporate oligarchy, gives me hope for a better future for my progeny. Yet, ominously, the controlling faction within the Republican Party, has over the past 40 years, begun to eschew the norms of our country’s political system. This violation began in earnest during the Administration of Bill Clinton, flexed its powerful muscles during the war crimes of the George W. Bush Administration and has reached its apogee during the Administration of Barack Obama, our first African-American President.
While fancifully deeming their guiding political philosophy Conservatism, this anti-democratic element has ignored what Conservatism means, to wit: “a political and social philosophy promotes retaining traditional social institutions in the context of culture and civilization. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others, called reactionaries, oppose modernism and seek a return to “the way things were” The element that controls and speaks for the Republican Party these days are indeed reactionaries.
In their retrograde desire to return to a past of White Supremacy, oppression of minorities, elimination of all programs of social benefit and Christian religious hegemony, these phony “conservatives” have violated the common norms of American democracy by refusing to recognize as valid any political positions that differ from their own. In the Congress they have openly refused to even entertain any programs from this twice duly elected President’s Administration. They have blocked all the judicial appointments from Barack Obama, including that for the Supreme Court. In the individual States they have sought to keep those they see as opponents from voting, which is a basic rite of democracy.
I could go on, but I know any reading this, already know the long list of Republican obstructionism of what is left of the American democratic process. We know now that they are promising to refuse to deal with the initiatives of Hillary Clinton’s Administration, if she is elected. We can be damned sure that Hillary will be plagued by a series of Congressional Witch-Hunts, demanded investigations and phony impeachment proceedings. All of this Republican flim-flam grind the workings of the American political system to a halt. There is an over-riding necessity to identify these Republican machinations for what they are in order to oppose them. This is no less than Treason, which in law “is the crime that covers some of the more extreme acts against one’s nation or sovereign“. The Republican Party, by refusing to act within the norms of our American political system, is overtly committing treason against this country. They and their activities must therefore be labelled as traitors and traitorous.
